Alain Georges excellent book, the rise of Islamic calligraphy, deals with the development of Arabic calligraphy from pre-Islamic times to the modern style of writing.

NOT in the container! Pour a little in a saucer or cup and dilute from there.
If you decide to dilute the whole bottle, then later when you desire more vibrant wash in your design, the ink is unfortunately already too weak for your other projects.
I have used Higgins for years... and students use it all the time. I think it means you CAN dilute with water (as opposed to acrylics or other inks that you cannot do so).
Use straight from the bottle. If it is too thick, then serving up a small portion (in a smaller container---like a bottle top), add a drop or 2 of distilled water.
